When people think about business strategy, they usually talk about capital, market share, innovation, and return on investment. What they often overlook is one of the most powerful tools any successful businessperson has—philanthropy. In my experience, giving back isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s a smart, long-term strategy that builds stronger communities, sharper brands, and deeper purpose.
I didn’t start out with millions in the bank or headlines in the news. I grew up on a farm in a small Texas town. I know what it means to work hard, to value every opportunity, and to never forget where you came from. That’s shaped how I see success—not just as personal gain, but as a responsibility to pay it forward.
The Power of Purpose
Let’s be clear: success means nothing if it’s not tied to something bigger than yourself. You can win all the lawsuits, make all the money, and build all the businesses in the world, but if it doesn’t serve a greater good, it’s hollow. Purpose gives success meaning. And philanthropy gives purpose direction.
When I donate, when I chair a gala, or when I support a cause, I’m not doing it for the headlines. I’m doing it because it aligns with who I am—and because I believe the strongest leaders serve. That service, by the way, resonates far beyond the nonprofit space. It builds trust. It inspires loyalty. And yes, it opens doors in business.
Philanthropy Builds Reputation
In the courtroom, reputation is everything. The same goes for business. People want to work with someone they trust—someone who stands for something. When your actions show that you’re invested in more than profits, you earn respect. That respect translates into relationships, and relationships are the foundation of every successful venture.
Over the years, I’ve made it a point to give back meaningfully. Whether it’s donating my exotic car collection to charity or helping raise millions for children’s causes, I want people to know this: success is meant to be shared. When your brand is tied to generosity, people remember. They want to be part of it. They want to work with you, support you, and follow your lead.
Doing Good Creates Real Impact—For Everyone
People like to draw a line between “doing business” and “doing good.” I don’t buy that. The two are deeply connected. Strong communities create strong economies. Healthy families lead to healthier markets. When you invest in people, you’re investing in stability, opportunity, and growth—not just for others, but for your business too.
I’ve seen firsthand how philanthropy changes lives. I’ve seen people get the medical help they need, the job training that sets them up for success, the support that helps them get back on their feet. When you contribute to that kind of change, you’re not just writing a check—you’re building a future.
Giving Back Strengthens Leadership
As a lawyer and business owner, I’ve always believed leadership isn’t just about calling the shots—it’s about setting the tone. If you want to lead well, lead by example. Support your team. Support your city. Support the causes that matter to the people around you. That’s how you create culture. That’s how you build loyalty.
Your employees notice. Your clients notice. Your competitors notice. When you give back, you show that success hasn’t made you selfish—it’s made you stronger, and more generous. That’s a reputation that attracts top talent, strong partnerships, and lasting relationships.
Philanthropy Isn’t Just for Billionaires
You don’t need a private jet or a skyscraper with your name on it to start giving back. Anyone can begin—whether it’s with time, mentorship, or financial support. Start small if you need to. Volunteer. Sponsor a local youth team. Fund a scholarship. Philanthropy is about intention, not size. What matters is that you act.
The smartest businesspeople I know don’t wait until they’ve “made it” to give—they build philanthropy into their strategy from the start. That mindset creates success with staying power. It turns companies into cornerstones and leaders into legacies.
Make Your Success Count
Look, I’m proud of the wins I’ve earned in court. I’m proud of the businesses I’ve built. But what means the most to me are the lives I’ve been able to touch outside the office and the courtroom. That’s the real scorecard. That’s the part that lasts.
In a world that often tells you to take as much as you can, I believe the smartest move you can make is to give. Give back. Give often. Give with intention. Because when your success is tied to service, it becomes unstoppable.
Philanthropy isn’t a distraction from business—it’s a multiplier. It fuels relationships, strengthens brands, and defines legacies. In my experience, it’s the most powerful business strategy of all.
